Hong Kong citizens want Portuguese citizenship
Hong Kong residents increasingly see Portugal as a gateway to Europe. According to the South China Morning Post, the people of the former British colony are concerned about the erosion of freedoms lived in the country and therefore consider obtaining Portuguese citizenship.
A spokesman for the Consulate General of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong says it is customary to receive about 120 monthly requests for Portuguese citizenship. Some residents of the former British colony say they plan to obtain citizenship via descendants of Portuguese citizens, because they have connections with Macau and through Golden Visa.
One of the main reasons for this has to do with the growing loss of freedom in the territory, marked by massive demonstrations lasting more than a month, against amendments to a law that would allow extradited criminal suspects to the interior of China.
