Portuguese emigrants return to their home country for good

Nationality, Non-habitual Resident, Visas and Residence Permits

A study reveals that during the year 2021, more than half of the immigrants who entered Portugal were Portuguese emigrants who returned to their home country for good

According to a study by Pordata (PORDATA – Estatísticas, gráficos e indicadores), a database on contemporary Portugal and Europe, at the end of 2021, around 51,000 immigrants had entered the country, of which 52% were Portuguese emigrants – people born in Portugal – who decided to return to their home country for good.

The document also reveals that in terms of immigration and based on data from 2021, citizens of Portuguese nationality who emigrate are mostly qualified people with higher education.

On the other hand, the 2021 Immigration Report, a document publicly presented in January 2023, indicates that throughout 2021, around 60,000 Portuguese emigrated, with the United Kingdom being the main destination chosen, followed by Spain, Switzerland, France. Outside Europe, the Portuguese who emigrated chose Angola and Mozambique. Data also indicate that the number of Portuguese nationals emigrating to Macau was the lowest in this century (since 2000).
