The five most popular cities to buy a house in Portugal

Real estate
buy a house

Most Portuguese emigrants looking to buy a house in Portugal prefer the main cities such as Lisbon and Porto.

The data was collected from a study carried out by Idealista, who analyzed the online searches in Portuguese based in non-Portuguese-speaking countries.

Lisbon concentrates 23.6% of the portuguese searches abroad, followed by Porto with 16.2%, Faro (9.3%), Setúbal (9.2%), Braga (8.8%) and Aveiro (5.6%). The following are Leiria (4.2%), Santarém (3.5%), Viseu (3.2%), Coimbra (3.1%), Viana do Castelo (2.3%) and Madeira Island (2.2%).

In the ranking of the most searched cities from abroad by the Portuguese, Lisbon is in the first position for all searches from France, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and Italy. Porto and Cascais also appear in the Top 5 of the same countries.

If you are looking to buy a house in Portugal, the Golden Visa program allows you to obtain a residence permit through a real estate investment, job creation or capital transfer.

Although Lisbon and Porto are the preferred cities to invest in real estate, from 1st January 2022, due to changes to the Golden Visa Program, some restrictions on investment will arise in some regions of the country. For this reason, it is important that interested parties start their process as soon as possible to take advantage of the current investment conditions.

Check out our interactive map for cities that remain eligible to obtain the Golden Visa Portugal.
