As of October 15, 2025, the final administrative extension under Decree-Law No. 10-A\/2020<\/a> has ended. This decree had successively extended the validity of expired documents for over 5 years. With the end of this automatic extension, Residence Permits that have expired are no longer valid and have no legal effect if the holder has not yet initiated the renewal process.<\/p>\n

This measure aimed to temporarily regularize the situation of holders of expired Residence Permits between February 22, 2020 and June 30, 2025, ensuring full exercise of rights during the renewal period, but it has now come to an end.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve already requested the renewal but haven\u2019t received the new residence card yet<\/strong><\/h3>\n

If you’ve already applied to renew your residence card but haven’t received it yet, you should know that, for the purposes of proving your legal status, holders who have already applied to renew their residence permit with the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) can present proof of their renewal application. This document is valid for 180 days from the date of issue and serves as legal proof of your regular status during the renewal process.<\/p>\n

What is the current renewal procedure?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Unlike Residence Permits that expired after June 30, 2025, which must be renewed exclusively via the Portal das Renova\u00e7\u00f5es<\/a>, those that expired between February 22, 2020 and June 30, 2025 are being renewed directly by AIMA\u2019s Mission Structure. This means that, on the one hand, AIMA’s Mission Structure guarantees the renewal of Residence Permits that expire by June30, 2025, while on the other, AIMA’s Mission Structure guarantees the renewal of Residence Permits that expire after July 1, 2025.<\/p>\n

AIMA’s Mission Structure is a temporary structure that was created to accelerate the analysis and renewal of expired permits. In order to implement these measures, the holders of these authorisations are being notified by email to renew them, guaranteeing the legal continuity of their stay in Portugal. They have thus been notified to pay the fees due for renewal and, subsequently, to submit and validate the information and documentation required to proceed with the renewal.<\/p>\n

What if I haven\u2019t been notified yet?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Holders who, today, have not yet been notified by the Mission Structure to renew their Residence Permit should go directly to the Mission Structure portal to request the respective notification and ensure that the process begins.<\/p>\n

In view of all these changes, it is recommended that all holders of expired Residence Permits start the renewal process as soon as possible, through the means provided by the Mission Structure, guaranteeing the regularisation of their legal situation in national territory.<\/p>\n
