Digital Nomads: Madeira among the 8 best places in the world to work

Golden Visa, Nationality, Non-habitual Resident, Visas and Residence Permits

According to the Kiwi.com platform, the island of Madeira, in Portugal, is among the 8 best places in the world for digital nomads which means for exclusively remote work.

Digital nomads are workers who, due to their duties, only need a computer or a tablet and internet access to carry out their professional activity and can perform their tasks from any point of the globe.

If a few years ago these professionals were seen as sui generis tourists, they are now part of the reality of several countries: they are workers from the most diverse areas, eager to discover new places, people and customs and who create their own community, ultimately boosting countries’ economies while demystifying a new labor paradigm.

The popular worldwide international and domestic flight search platform, Kiwi.com, has released a list of the best destinations for digital nomads, based on experience, knowledge and ratings and reviews on remote.com (www.remote.com)

Kiwi.com intended with this list to help digital nomads – who by nature can and like to travel – but also all those who meet the basic conditions to integrate this new work model.

Madeira, Portugal

The island of Madeira is characterized by its subtropical climate, excellent cuisine and the famous wine named after the island. The combination of these factors leads tourists to visit the island all year round, however, it has already been created in partnership with Startup Madeira and the regional government, Digital Nomads Madeira (Home – DIGITAL NOMADS Madeira Islands (startupmadeira.eu), a kind of village for these workers, where there are work and co-work places, activities for the community and high-speed internet connections. There are other reasons that make Madeira a natural choice for digital nomads:

  • Affordable prices (cost of living)
  • Infrastructure
  • Relatively easy access to health services
  • Safety
  • Welcoming people
  • Easy air connection to mainland Portugal

Toronto, Canada

The capital of Canada is located by the sea, is cosmopolitan, inhabited by a diverse and international population and offers a good quality of life with excellent public transport, fantastic nightlife, cafes, restaurants and welcoming people.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

According to this report, Chgiang Mai – city where there are more foreigners than in Bangkok – is currently the best place to be in Thailand and for the following reasons:

  • Easy access (to get out of the city and visit other places)
  • International and safe city
  • Internet connection speed suitable for digital nomads

Svalbard, Norway

Norway provides lifetime visas for digital nomads (who can come and go as they please) and Svalbard’s largest city, Longyearbyen, offers excellent internet connections as well as plenty of coworking spaces.

Salt Lake City, Utah, United States of America

The city of Salt Lake City, located in the western region of the United States of America, has become a favorite of digital nomads due to the high number of public workspaces and the efficient transport network inside and outside the city at an affordable cost.

Willemstad, Curacao

The capital of the island of Curaçao, Willemstad provides digital nomads with Dutch-influenced architecture, with its tall houses in addition to other features that conquer this professional class:

  • Caribbean cuisine
  • European-style bars and pubs
  • The population speaks at least two of the 4 official languages: Dutch, English, Spanish and Papiamentu – a Portuguese creole
  • Pleasant and open-minded community
  • Considered a place with a cheap cost of living

Auckland, New Zealand

The Kiwi.com platform emphasizes the fact that Auckland is a busy and international city that combines cosmopolitanism with nature (and the various trails where you can take walks) or with the beach. The fact that it was built around a volcano provides breathtaking views. At the same time, air and rail links to other parts of Australia work well.

Mishima, Japan

This Japanese city has the advantage of being off the beaten path for tourists and foreigners alike and is close to the beaches on the north side of Sururga Bay. In addition, it provides digital nomads with:

  • Night life
  • Cultural life
  • Traditional and international trade
  • It is 45 minutes by high-speed train or 2.5 hours by bus from Tokyo or Shizuoka City
