Air Traffic Restrictions in March

Visas and Residence Permits
air traffic

The Portuguese Government decided to extend the restrictive air traffic measures until March 16. All commercial and private flights to and from Brazil and the United Kingdom, except for humanitarian and repatriation flights, are suspended.

In a statement, the Ministry of Internal Affairs explains that passengers from Brazil and the United Kingdom to Portugal, who make a stopover in other countries, will have to present a negative test to covid-19 and comply with 14 days of prophylactic isolation, at home or in a place indicated by the health authorities.

Flights, to and from mainland Portugal, and to and from the European Union countries and the countries associated with the Schengen Area are authorised.

At the same time, “exclusively essential” travel to and from countries that are not part of the European Union or those who are not countries associated with the Schengen Area are also allowed, as well as trips to support the return of nationals and third-country nationals legally resident in national territory.

Passengers are required to:

Passengers, except for children up to 24 months of age, have to present a valid Covid-19 negative test, taken within 72 hours prior to the time of boarding.

Citizens from countries whose incidence rate is 500 cases or more per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, in addition to the presentation of the Covid-19 negative test, must comply with a prophylactic isolation period of 14 days, except for essential travel whose period of stay in national territory, attested by the return ticket, does not exceed 48 hours.

However, national citizens and foreigners with a residence permit in Portugal, as well as diplomatic personnel, who, exceptionally, do not present proof of the Covid-19 negative test, they must carry out the test upon arrival at their own expense.

Lastly, third-country nationals without legal residence in national territory who embark without the presentation of the Covid-19 negative test will not be allowed to enter Portugal.

This order related to the air traffic restritions shall take effect until 16th March 2021 and may be revised at any time as the epidemiological situation evolves.
